PROJECT #2 Creation Myths

Project Objectives
Students will be introduced to hand built clay forms via:
  • Pinch pots
  • coil pots
  • slap building
  • hollow forms
  • press clay forms* optional

Students will do research of 4 Creation Myths (minimum) from 4 separate indigenous cultural groups.
  • Show evidence of this research in your sketchbooks with: 
  • image
  • details of the object
  • textual information about the culture its from and brief summary of the myth

Oneida Nation: Haudenosaunee Creation Myth



Australian Aborigine Creation Myth

Students will create 8 thumbnails in their sketchbooks of their concepts for the myth they wish to create.

Make use of collaged images such as ideas from the rich history of Exquisite Corpse Victorian game.





Rules
All forms need to make use of hand building techniques including: 
  • pinch pot
  • coil making
  • slap building
  • press clay forms into plaster molds optional*

All forms need to be on the thin side and hollow!
All forms need to be at minimum 8” in height
You may separately fire pieces that will be epoxied into place following bisque fire (or final fire)
All forms will be bisque fired with surface applications - paint, stains, glaze, etc.

Students may wish to add found objects to their works*

** Prior to the critique of the project: 
Create a listing of 7 talking points in your sketchbooks.  These include: 
  1. Details of inspirational researched source
  2. Give us details of the evolutionary process you made from concept drawings >  to final form + why
  3. What inspired you to commit to the surface application you did?
  4. Problems you ran into within the project > other than time, of course!
  5. How did you solve the problems? 
  6. Visually, how is the sculpture you’ve created visually effective? In other words, how does it activate space? How does the surface treatment communicate your concept and why. Be specific here.
  7. In hindsight, how would you improve your project?
