Writing + Research Tools + Paper/multi-media Assignments

Thinking, creating and writing go hand in hand in all studio practice.

Engagement in research is an expectation of all art and design students beyond what is discussed in class.
Students will engage in the research of artists and particular groups of visual makers, traditional or contemporary who have complemented visual culture in some way.

From the 3D Designer/Sculptural artist list I have published earlier on this blog, each student will do two short research papers on two separate artists you have been inspired by.  This allows for you to delve deeply into a sculptor's work and be curious and inspired about their portfolio.

The first research paper will be on a 3D designer from utilitarian project world (fashion, furniture, architecture, car, toys, etc.)

The second research paper will be a contemporary sculptor that has work completed from 1960 to the present.

TWO research papers +
Multi Media presentation to class
Throughout the term you will delve into research deeper focusing on individual artists, designers and groups of visual makers you are interested in.

Each student will write a paper giving a brief about the artist's
BIO - one page (including b./d. dates, nationality, where they studied, who and what they are inspired by)

followed by....
three-four pages of a deconstructive analysis of two works of art created by the sculptor including:

i. Image of work, title, materials, year, dimensions, collection
ii. Analysis of how 4 of the most prominent elements & principles of design are operating in both works.
iii. Your research should be well organized in a 5 page formal paper
iv. Your research paper should have a properly cited BIBLIOGRAPHY MLA / APA style
v. Your completed research paper needs to be sent to me via WORD.doc to jpepper@cazenovia.edu before the due date with time stamp.

NOTE: Do not send via Google.docs --- I will return it to you!

>  I am happy to see drafts, at minimum, 12 days in advance of the due date <

You will deliver your research of the sculptor in a PPT to the class as a whole.
This will include:
i. BIOGRAPHICAL info of the sculptor: 2 slides
ii. One work you have thoroughly analyzed: 1 slide
iii. Two other images that you will simply introduce to the class with details: 1/2 slides
 * Multi media presentation should be 7 minutes (less than 10)

Your research activity, the writing of a thorough and mechanically superior research paper, and constructed PPT that will be delivered to the class will be worth 20% of your final grade.

PLEASE NOTE:
Prior to handing in your research papers, all students need to vet their work through this handy grammar/spelling app.
Download the app now onto your desktop. It is a free app.

I strongly recommend you make use of this app in all of your college papers.
It's informative
It's user-friendly

MORE HELPFUL INFORMATION IN ORDER TO ORGANIZE YOUR RESEARCH PAPER'S ANATOMY:
I hope this will assist you, not only here, but for your future research papers about some subject!

PAGE #1
Look on the web for essays, their personal websites, and more for general information about the artist you are researching

BIO
Write about the birth/death date of the artist
What is their nationality, where are they living, have lived, died?
What formal educational training did they study, where, who did the study under?
Important factors about their lives that might seem especially connected to their work you may have found
What collections can their works be found in, name of institution, city, country
Who/what are their influences?

PAGE #2
Select 2 images you like of the artist’s works.
Speak about the earliest first, call this Figure #1
Speak about the latest second, call this Figure #2
Explain the influences you see evolving from Figure #1 to Figure #2

PAGE #3 - #4
Deconstruction of the Figure #1
Introduce the work of art with the details: title, date, media, dimensions, collection it might belong to
Is there anything oddly significant about the materials, the scale, the site? I.E. Mona Lisa created by Vic Muniz in chocolate syrup is VERY different than Da Vinci’s Mona, yes?
How?

Speak about how the artist may have made it.
For instance Tom Friedman’s carved self portrait in an aspirin, prompts a very different response in regards to meaning than say a self portrait carved in marble.  Yes?

Describe the most dominant Elements + Principles of Design that you see within the work
Line
Shape
Color & value
Form / volume / mass
texture
repetition
etc.
Discuss at least 4 of these in at least two or three paragraphs each.

Embed the image of the work you are discussing and give details below it.
For instance…
Figure #1
Artist
Title (italics always), date
media
dimensions
collection

My examples I have published onto the course assignment will assist you here.
Please READ them to assist you in how to structure an excellent paper anatomy.

PAGE #5 - #6
Do the same as above with a deconstruction of FIGURE #2
Duplicate Figure #1 structure above

PAGE #7
Summarize the overarching artist’s work you have presented and convince your reader how important this individual’s works are to the world at large.

PAGE #8
Works cited or bibliography page include URL’s

Tad-da!
Make sure you run your written work through grammarly.com - to proof towards establishing excellent mechanics of writing; grammar, spelling, etc.

Re read your work out loud.
Have someone else read it!
If they have questions or if something is not presented clearly, guess what?
I will too!!

Get ‘er done!

Research papers are always double spaced, formerly written with factual researched examples to back up the writer’s statements.
It is not a subjective paper, saying very little or being vague, riddled with spelling errors or sentences that don’t make sense, thus tripping-up the reader in their read!
A good paper should teach the reader something.
